About SASSA
SASSA, or the South African Social Security Agency, is an entity of the Department of Social Development responsible for administering social assistance as per Section 3 of the Social Assistance Act. This mainly involves providing benefits and grant money to recipients. You can follow them on Twitter @OfficialSASSA for the latest news and email updates directly from the organization.
SASSA provides South Africans with various social grants, including care-dependent, child support, disability, and war veterans grants.
The department recently set up the special Covid-19 R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant, more commonly known as the SRD R350 grant. This grant provides R350 per month for six months to individuals who are currently unemployed and do not receive any form of income, social grant, or UIF payment. You can find out more about the Covid SRD R350 grant, including the application process and eligibility criteria, on the SASSA website: https://srd.sassa.gov.za
SASSA manages all R350 Grant Applications and social grant payments.
What if my application for grant payment has been rejected?
Some people find that their grant payment is declined with a response such as ‘Registered at SARS for PAYE’ or ‘Receiving a source of income’ when they check the status. According to SASSA requirements, to qualify for the grant, the applicant must be unemployed (and not have any source of income) and not receiving UIF or any other grants. However, as of July 2021, this does not include people receiving a child support grant. SASSA reports that when an application is declined, it is usually because the applicant has an income greater than R595 per month, excluding any child grant.
If your SRD application is rejected, you can make an appeal on the SRD website. For declined applications, the client can submit a service request for reconsideration through the website under the tab: application for reconsideration.
In the last round of applications, SASSA directed appeals and questions to be sent to covid19srdappeals@sassa.gov.za.
With this information, you can stay up-to-date with your SASSA grant status and take any necessary action if your application is rejected.
